Why is the castle closed?
Here’s a little update on the BIG thing that’s happening at Tonbridge Castle over the next few months. The castle is currently closed for some much-needed restoration work to keep the roof water-tight and protect our treasured Ancient Monument. If you've walked by recently, you might have noticed that scaffolding is going up around the entire Gatehouse (inside and out) and that footpaths around and through the Gatehouse are closed. This is to ensure the work can be done safely at roof level and with public safety in mind.
Once the scaffolding is secure we’ll be removing the old zinc roof covering (the structure and boarding will remain, so there will still be a ‘roof’ at all times), making timber and stonework repairs and then putting on a brand-new roof covering. Plus, we'll be upgrading the lighting system inside the Great Hall. The grounds and gift shop will remain open throughout the course of the works, so do visit for a coffee and a stroll.
The restoration has received Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent, so everything is being done with the utmost care to protect the castle, which as we all know is more than just a historical site; it's a recognised landmark and a venue for many events and activities, making it a community hub. Stay tuned for further updates and we look forward to welcoming you back once the work is complete!
How we got here
In 2003, we added a roof to the gatehouse. Now twenty years on, it's showing signs of wear and tear. In other words, it's leaking. In 2024 the work we carried out was a stopgap. Aiming to make some temporary fixes to stop the rain coming into the building.

The photo shows the interior scaffolding. The temporary fix keep us going until mid-2024. We are now making a permanent fix, with full scaffolding and another closure.
